Natural logarithms









Well today we did natural logarithms which in fact are the same as logarithms but using the base of e which is commonly valued at 2.71828 ( which should be memorized). Also we learned that 1(1+(1/n))^n is always equal to e however if you try and use excel to prove this point you will eventually be able to get the the computer very upset with you and it might try to do this to you.

Ew! Red Meat!!

Well, today in class was an open day. We all worked on exercises or accelerated math that had been assigned. We're trying to prepare that I heard Mr. Maks call the "Man-maker" test today. I wonder if I pass if I will start to grow chest hair? Anyways, this article I found very interesting, especially since I'm not a huge fan of red meat at all. I stay away from it as much as possible. People always think I'm silly, and tease me and what not, but you know what? Now I have a valid excuse... "I'm silly? Really? Because I'm going to be living longer than you, you carnivore!" Haha. Totally kidding, but I do find this article very intriguing, check it out!!

Once considered a delicacy reserved for special occasions, red meat has become a regular part of our diets -- and not always to our benefit.

Those who eat more red meat have a modestly increased risk of death from all causes, cancer or heart disease, according a recent study by the U.S. National Cancer Institute.

The survey -- the largest done to date on the impact of red meat on health -- looked at more than half a million people aged 50 to 71 over a 10-year period. The results were released in the March 23 edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

For years it has been known people who consume large quantities of red meat have an increased risk of contracting certain diseases, particularly colon cancer. This is caused by three main factors:

1) Grilled meat that has been charred on a barbecue contains carcinogens that can cause the genetic mutation of cells in the colon, which can develop into tumours.

2) Red meat is an important source heme iron, a type of iron linked to the myoglobin in muscle tissue. In high doses, as is the case with frequent meat eaters, this type of iron can irritate the colon's mucous membrane and cause abnormal cell growth which can lead to cancer.

3) Frequent red meat eaters often have a poor diet of fruits and vegetables, food items that play a crucial role in protecting the body from cancer.

In the study, researchers scrutinized the eating habits of more than 545,000 people beginning in 1995.

The participants completed a food frequency questionnaire to estimate their intake of various meats and were then followed until 2005.

During that period, 47,976 men and 23,276 women died.

The researchers found that people who consumed more red meat, about the equivalent of a quarter-pound (115 g) per day, had a 22% greater risk of dying prematurely from cancer and a 27% greater risk of death related to a heart ailment compared to those who ate less than a quarter-pound of red meat per week.

The correlation between red meat and cardiovascular disease seemed more prominent amongst women, with frequent meat eaters having a 50% greater risk of dying from a heart-related problem compared to women who rarely ate meat. Interestingly, these negative effects were not observed with white meat such as poultry and fish; those who ate these types of meat actually had a reduced risk (15-20%) of dying from cancer or cardiovascular disease.

It's important to keep in mind these observations do not mean red meat should be completely cut out of diets.

The delicious taste of these meats has been used for millenniums to add taste to soups and gravies as well as to dishes such as couscous, stews and different types of Asian stir-fries. It would be a shame to have to give it up completely.

Still, the recommendations of the World Cancer Research Fund are to reduce our intake of red meat to 500 g per week and to add other sources of protein such as fish and legumes to diversify our diets and improve our health.

Work period

Today, we had a work period to do our exercises or accelerated math. The accelerated math deadline is 30 objectives by about April 15, and it will be up to the end of logs. If you don't remember the questions from the exercises, they are:

At the start of today's class we had a discussion about global warming(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming) and the coming of another ice-age etc, which everyone in class agreed to be far more interesting than anything about logs, but we ended up doing logs in the end anyways... :|

Mental Math round two

Well today's class started off with us doing mental questions for about half the class we did a mental which was a blessing for a few of us and a curse for the rest. The rest of the class was devoted to doing more of the unit questions up to 22. we were assigned in the class lesson 21 questions #1-12.

also by the sounds of it in class i think most people wished that logs in math were this type of log.

Welcome Back!

In today's lesson we learned more about logs! WHOOP!! Hope everyone had a great spring break, if you're like me it feels like it went too fast. Just think of it this way, there's only... 52 days left of classes (and counting)! Take that as you may, but I'm pumped. That means 52 days until a two MONTH spring break, aka summer holidays.

ANYhow... this is the notes from today's class...

The test is now post-poned until next Wednesday, April the 15th. And we can still rewrite the test that we all did poorly on earlier. Perhaps next week? Let me know, if you have any suggestions, please comment on this post! I'll be checking!!

Mr. Maks strongly suggested that we remember to look and learn from our workbook as well! The R.J. Mickelson one. I know that I love it. I wasn't using it, and I was doing poorly on my tests. I read through the units we had covered, tried a couple of their example questions, and I got FIFTY PERCENT HIGHER on my next test! Now, obviously I had a lot of "learning room" you could say to get that big of an improvement.... but the moral of the story is, if you take the time to read the stuff, it will benefit you!

Wow! As I was preparing for tomorrow's test, I found this amazing 'cheat sheet.' Really it's just a bunch of formulas, but only for trig. I still find it amazing because it includes virtually everything! I'd check it out if I were you! Print yourself a copy, I know I will.

Today we started logarithms and the easiest way to explain what a logarithm is to call it the inverse of an exponent. http://www.purplemath.com/modules/logs.htm has an animation that does an exellent job of describing the relation between exponents and logarithms.

The exercise is lesson 18 questions 1 to 18.

We focused this class on double angle identities. Forgive me if I lead you down the wrong road here because I've lost my map and I am struggling to get back on course. That is to say I don't get it. The only thing I'm confident with my understanding of it was the part about 2 seperate angles who end up in the same position on a circle. Honestly I have know idea how to describe the idea of it simpler than Max's traveling to Bowsmen through Lenswood idea. Max also went through the identity formulas, which helped me enough that if I had to do a question like that I could plug in the formula and get the correct answer, but I don't know why it does what it does.
